The first thing I did was to search for remodeling
calculators.
Here's the problem with most remodeling
calculators:
However, with the
remodeling calculators I came across,
the problem I found was
that most of the remodeling calculators seemed to only
be guides to what contractors charge, (labor or price per
square foot for construction) which varies greatly region to
region throughout the country.
The materials on
the other hand are somewhat consistent across the board and
it's really the materials you select that have the
biggest impact on what the total costs are going to
be and NONE of the remodeling calculators I
found seemed to offer any detailed information about the cost
of materials.
When you hear a
total figure for a kitchen remodel from any of the many
remodeling calculator guides, they don’t really tell you
anything. They don’t tell you what materials were
used. Did
they use laminate? Granite? Solid Surface?
Were the cabinets stock cabinets? Custom cabinets? What
type of wood was used? Was it solid or veneer?
What grade were the appliances
selected?
These remodeling
calculators don’t tell you any of this.
They couldn’t possibly
give you this information in their remodeling
calculators. The best they can do is give you a
regional average based on what the average person did. Your situation,
however, is completely unique to you.
When I went onto remodeling forums
to look for information about how to estimate remodeling costs
I found out I wasn't the only one trying to find out this
information. Outside of financing questions,
the number one question most of the people
were asking was how do I calculate the remodeling costs? The answers were go to
your local home improvement centers and do your research.
So I decided to take that advice and do
the research.
I’ve been into
remodeling for quite a while and I thought I was pretty
knowledgeable about what materials were available for
remodeling and I thought I was just going to be
researching pricing, but along the way I found out so
many things I didn’t know about the materials.
I also
found out about materials that I had never even heard of or
